Last night I decided to make homemade pizza. But I’m tired of ‘pizza’, so I decided I’d make some calzone instead. The dough recipe that I used was from All Recipes (like most recipes I use are) and was a cinch to make. And delicious! It literally took me just a few minutes to throw it all together.
- 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 1 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
- 2 1/2 cups bread flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Preheat oven to 450. In medium bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
- Stir in flour, salt and oil. Beat until smooth. Let rest 5 minutes.
- Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and par or roll into a round. Transfer crust to a lightly greased pizza pan dusted with cornmeal. Spread with desired toppings and bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Let baked pizza cool for 5 minutes before serving.
The only mistake I made was not having the oven hot enough. The crust didn’t get as brown as I think it should have been, but it still tasted delicious. The recipe above made 5 calzone- Elijah ate 3 of them. No joke. The kid will make me poor when he is a teenager. I could barely finish one, I don’t know where this kid puts it all, I really don’t.
While this recipe isn’t really exciting so to speak, it is VERY cheap and easy, my two favorite things. It pleases Elijah and it pleases me. There is nothing that smells better than baking bread (at least to me). Not necessarily a healthy meal, but an easy one in a pinch. And so easy to customize each calzone to a family member as well. Easy peasy!
